Why That Photo of Your New House Keys Could Be a Security Risk
New homeowners love posting a photo holding up their keys the day they move in. A cybersecurity professional is warning that the habit might be handing strangers a working copy of the front door.
Evan Ottinger, a red team operator based in Virginia who spends his career simulating break-ins for corporate clients, decided to test whether an ordinary photo could really be turned into a physical key. He picked up the idea after taking a course on covert entry techniques, taught by physical security expert Deviant Ollam, where lock-picking, key decoding and 3D-printed duplicates were all on the syllabus.
The process, as Ottinger describes it, doesn't call for anything exotic. He started with a plain picture of a key and laid a free decoding overlay over it — a transparent template that lines up with the ridges and cuts on a key to work out its exact code. That code went into an open-source design tool that builds a digital 3D model of the key from those measurements. From there, he used GIMP, a free image editor, to fine-tune the proportions against the original photo. The finished design was sent to a consumer 3D printer and printed in ordinary plastic filament.
Every piece of software involved was free. The only paid item was the printer itself, and Ottinger points out that's optional too — a duplicate can just as easily be cut by hand or run through a standard key-cutting machine once the code is known.
What struck him most was the speed. Someone comfortable with the process, he said, could go from a downloaded photo to a finished key in roughly ten to fifteen minutes. Within the security research community, he described this as a fairly basic exercise rather than an advanced hack.
The bigger concern for Ottinger isn't just that it's possible — it's that it's invisible. Traditional break-in methods like lock-picking tend to leave marks that a trained eye can spot later. Walking in with a working key leaves nothing behind and draws no attention from anyone watching.
His advice is to treat a house key the way most people already treat a password: not something to broadcast. He also recommends not relying on the lock alone. Cameras, alarms and other layers of security make a property a much less appealing target, even if the key itself were ever compromised.
The takeaway isn't that 3D printing is uniquely dangerous — duplicating keys from photos has been technically possible for years. What's changed is how accessible the tools have become, and how casually people hand over the one image that makes it easy.
